# Inside Arca’s long-horizon agents that run the business

[02:20:31](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8431s) We provide our clients with financial services like financial planning, tax planning, asset management, investment advice,

[02:20:40](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8440s) and we serve a range of clients.

[02:20:42](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8442s) Some of them are like technology executives that have amassed a lot of wealth and need a real plan to retire early.

[02:20:49](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8449s) but also that family in New Hampshire that made their first million dollars

[02:20:54](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8454s) and want to buy that house finally.

[02:20:59](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8459s) I said we were AI native.

[02:21:01](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8461s) There's lots of definitions of this term these days, very overused.

[02:21:06](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8466s) What we mean by AI native is that agents run our business.

[02:21:12](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8472s) Not that they assist the business from some co-pilot corner.

[02:21:16](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8476s) They execute the decisions that shape the outcomes that our business has for our clients.

[02:21:24](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8484s) Work in this industry, it's interesting to know what it looks like.

[02:21:28](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8488s) In financial services, the work is more long horizon and less long running.

[02:21:33](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8493s) And what I mean by that is this is less agents grinding tokens for like hours or days on end, right?

[02:21:41](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8501s) This is more one client goal that spans 10 days.

[02:21:45](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8505s) It's very stop-start. There's many actors in between, many decision points, many handoffs, and ultimately that goal lands like 10 days later.

[02:21:55](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8515s) That is the kind of work that we are working on.

[02:21:59](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8519s) And so here's an example. Jane's our client, fairly wealthy, but has a big tax bill.

[02:22:05](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8525s) Oh. Has a big tax bill in April 15th, right?

[02:22:11](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8531s) So we're going to help Jane figure out what is the most tax-optimal way for this cash to be raised to pay the tax bill.

[02:22:21](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8541s) So there's the advisor that will do all of the statement analysis and the analysis of how to make this tax optimal.

[02:22:28](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8548s) There's the trader that would actually liquidate the assets.

[02:22:34](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8554s) assets themselves will take days to settle, and then the ops people will come in and trigger the ACH.

[02:22:39](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8559s) that will itself take days to land.

[02:22:42](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8562s) So this is kind of the work I'm talking about in this industry,

[02:22:46](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8566s) which takes days to settle.

[02:22:49](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8569s) And of course, if you do this at scale for several, several clients,

[02:22:52](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8572s) the amount of time our firm takes to do this sort of work exponentiates, right?

[02:22:56](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8576s) So at ARCA, we took a different approach.

[02:23:01](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8581s) It's helpful to know that ARCA is not a SaaS company.

[02:23:05](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8585s) We are not selling software to other businesses, to other firms.

[02:23:09](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8589s) We are the firm.

[02:23:11](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8591s) We're an applied AI company that happens to be running a services business in this industry.

[02:23:16](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8596s) And so the approach we took was, all right, we're going to have agents own this whole long horizon outcome end to end.

[02:23:24](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8604s) And for that, we gave them a couple of key components I'll give you a sneak peek of.

[02:23:28](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8608s) We gave them signals from the external world that keeps them really aware of what is happening.

[02:23:34](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8614s) So that email will be read by agents.

[02:23:36](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8616s) We gave them all of our operational context on what to do about that email.

[02:23:40](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8620s) What does this industry do with the situation of taxes?

[02:23:43](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8623s) We gave them a harness that gives them all of the tools and the guardrails,

[02:23:49](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8629s) and more importantly, persistence of memory over the long horizon period

[02:23:54](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8634s) to carry that work out.

[02:23:56](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8636s) And, of course, we gave them the ability to collaborate with people.

[02:24:07](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8647s) because all we did was we took humans out of the critical path of this work.

[02:24:29](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8669s) this email, much like many other signals in our platform,

[02:24:35](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8675s) will be read by background agents.

[02:24:38](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8678s) So there's phone calls our firm is making,

[02:24:40](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8680s) there's documents that are coming in,

[02:24:41](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8681s) there's meetings being had,

[02:24:43](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8683s) there's events coming in from our custodian,

[02:24:45](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8685s) there's market movement that's happening.

[02:24:47](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8687s) These are all signals that our background agents

[02:24:49](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8689s) are continuously evaluating to progress work.

[02:24:53](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8693s) So this email is one of those signals.

[02:24:55](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8695s) And when the signal is ingested by agents,

[02:24:58](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8698s) they actually get to the work.

[02:24:59](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8699s) right? We have a harness that gives them the knowledge to know what to do about the situation.

[02:25:05](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8705s) They have deep client memory, so they know, hey, let's never touch Jane's Apple position,

[02:25:10](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8710s) because she said that in a call like eight months ago, right? We, of course, have a sandbox for all

[02:25:15](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8715s) of the financial computation that needs to happen for this analysis. But largely, I think harnesses

[02:25:21](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8721s) today are coalescing on a standard shape. So it's more interesting what happens outside of

[02:25:27](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8727s) this harness.

[02:25:30](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8730s) So, after they've done the work, they produce this plan.

[02:25:34](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8734s) This plan by itself cannot be executed without people.

[02:25:37](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8737s) So, in our product, we build a space, agents build a space, where they put out this plan,

[02:25:42](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8742s) and you can chat with the agent to kind of know what's happening with the plan.

[02:25:47](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8747s) There's multiple people that can be chatting with the agent.

[02:25:50](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8750s) And more importantly, this space is where also they pull people in when they need people

[02:25:55](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8755s) to execute some work.

[02:25:57](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8757s) So here in this case, we would approve the plan and the email out to Jane.

[02:26:02](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8762s) And then there's this whole dance of, has Jane replied?

[02:26:06](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8766s) What does her answer mean for the plan that we had?

[02:26:10](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8770s) And then all of these other questions that will have to be answered

[02:26:13](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8773s) throughout this whole long-horizon work.

[02:26:16](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8776s) At Arca, we were like, of course, we're not going to have people babysitting it.

[02:26:21](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8781s) So we let our agents watch the world so people don't have to.

[02:26:24](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8784s) We give them tools to be able to register interest in anything happening in our world.

[02:26:30](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8790s) So they're able to say, let me know when Jane responds.

[02:26:34](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8794s) Let me know when that ACH lands.

[02:26:36](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8796s) And this is powered by our signal system in the background,

[02:26:40](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8800s) where agents are routing signals to agents that are interested in it.

[02:27:09](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8829s) and we learn some information that affects the plan.

[02:27:12](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8832s) So the person goes in,

[02:27:14](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8834s) and they add this information into our UI.

[02:27:17](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8837s) But this act of adding information or doing work in our UI

[02:27:20](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8840s) is also a signal that will wake up an agent.

[02:27:24](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8844s) In fact, when people work in our product,

[02:27:27](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8847s) when they reschedule a calendar event,

[02:27:30](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8850s) that's a signal.

[02:27:31](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8851s) When they mark a task complete, that is a signal.

[02:27:35](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8855s) So this system lets us be both aware

[02:27:39](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8859s) of everything happening in the external world

[02:27:40](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8860s) and the internal world as work is progressing

[02:27:43](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8863s) so our agents can participate in work.

[02:27:48](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8868s) and of course agents are communicating with each other as well

[02:28:07](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8887s) and the last piece of the story is that

[02:28:13](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8893s) So the agent on the left has read operational context

[02:28:16](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8896s) to be like, okay, the next step here

[02:28:18](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8898s) is to pull in the person that trades these assets.

[02:28:24](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8904s) and gets pulled in to participate in this long horizon work.

[02:28:34](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8914s) for driving long horizon work.

[02:28:37](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8917s) What do people do at work, right?

[02:28:38](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8918s) They need to stay aware of what is happening,

[02:28:40](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8920s) so we've built this very intense signal system for our agents to be aware.

[02:28:45](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8925s) They need to know what to do next,

[02:28:47](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8927s) so we've given them all this operational context.

[02:28:51](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8931s) that lets them actually perform the work and keep track of it.

[02:29:13](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8953s) there's hundreds of these signals coming in,

[02:29:15](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8955s) and tasks are being added on people's plates,

[02:29:20](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8960s) they're being pulled in,

[02:29:21](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8961s) background agents are communicating with each other.

[02:29:24](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8964s) So over the last six months,

[02:29:26](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8966s) we've been working on getting this system to be really good.

[02:29:29](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8969s) We've been closing all of our context gaps

[02:29:32](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8972s) so that agents are fully aware.

[02:29:34](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8974s) We have been working on the precision of tasks,

[02:29:37](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8977s) So pulling in the right person at the right time.

[02:29:40](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8980s) Work that needs to be tracked for the future is tracked in the agent's memory.

[02:29:45](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8985s) Work that is doable now becomes a task, right?

[02:29:47](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8987s) So we've been working on our ability to hold state over long horizons as well.

[02:29:52](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8992s) And because we are the firm and not just a SaaS company,

[02:29:56](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=8996s) we've been changing and standardizing how work happens in the

[02:30:00](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=9000s) firm in the first place.

[02:30:01](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=9001s) And operationalizing that context into our agent state. And because these are our colleagues that use our product, we collect rich reasoning from them that become evals for our system to improve.

[02:30:16](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=9016s) So I guess there's a question to be asked here, like, why do this? What does this unlock? What is the takeaway here?

[02:30:25](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=9025s) For us, this is our whole thesis, is that we want our platform to be so AI native that agents drive the business.

[02:30:37](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=9037s) They are making the decisions that shape our outcomes.

[02:30:40](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=9040s) And so at ARCA, when people log in, they see a list of tasks that have been prepared for them by agents.

[02:30:48](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=9048s) They've already read that email.

[02:30:50](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=9050s) They've looked at the document that came in.

[02:30:52](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=9052s) they've done like 90% of the work,

[02:30:54](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=9054s) and they're pulling you in just when it's time for you to act.

[02:30:59](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=9059s) So building this system lets us get to a point where at Arca,

[02:31:09](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=9069s) which lets our agents drive the work that our firm does.

[02:31:25](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=9085s) Because we should have just been proactive about this in the first place, right?

[02:31:30](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=9090s) So Jane should never have to send this email.

[02:31:32](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=9092s) So say at, you know, our AI native business, we take on this new goal.

[02:31:42](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=9102s) Every January, prepare each client's tax situation

[02:31:46](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=9106s) and proactively reach out to them before anyone even asks.

[02:31:50](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=9110s) This is a new business goal for our business to drive.

[02:31:53](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=9113s) And in an AI native firm,

[02:31:56](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akEqiXFo3GM&t=9116s) all we have to do is make this goal part of our agent's set of goals.
